Synopsis: The SSD Review shows Acer C720 Chromebook users how to upgrade their 16GB stock drive with a 128GB MyDigitalSSD Super Cache 2 42mm (2242) M.2 NGFF and explains the benefits of upgrading storage on a cloud-based device.

Our friend Les Tokar over at The SSD Review give us his very own how-to for upgrading an Acer Chromebook C720 using a MyDigitalSSD Super Cache 2 42mm (2242) M.2 NGFF drive.

Just as UMPC Portal and Android Central before him, Les shows C720 users why this can be called the "world's easiest upgrade" but also compares performance of the Super Cache 2 to the 16GB stock drive and explains the benefits of added storage on a cloud-based device such as this one.

Here are some excepts:

"After spending a few days with this new Acer C720 Chromebook and getting to learn the ins and outs, I can honestly say that this is the simplest PC I have ever held."

"The Chromebook is small, powerful and battery life is far better than we will see in most SSDs today; a definite bonus on those long trips away and extended flights where one can surf the net, listen to music or watch videos from the Chromebook."

"Considering that Google’s Chromebook just might fit the bill as the most affordable PC solution for the typical user today, it is more than a bit puzzling why they would only include SSD capacities of 16GB or 32GB. That doesn’t even cover most of our photo, music or movie collections, much less data or other items we might want to download."

"MyDigitalSSD markets the perfect solution to this capacity problem in their M.2 Super Cache 2 line with capacities of 32, 64 and 128GB that are a simple replacement."

"For those new to the SSD world, don’t let the looks of these photos intimidate you; replacing the Kingston SSD with the MyDigitalSSD counterpart is extremely simple. As you will see on the next page, our replacement of the M.2 SSD will accomplish, not only a capacity increase, but performance as well."

"Looking at the standard Chromebook SSD, we can see that there is 14GB available after formatting, and then only 10.76GB after the OS backup and other files are included. The difficulty with this is that a SSD slows as it get full and, well let’s face it…a few pics, movies and songs and this SSD is full."

"The Kingston write speeds are well below that of a hard drive, much less SSD and, if you compare the two, the MyDigitalSSD SC2 M.2 SSD is almost 6 times faster with respect to high sequential write transfer speeds."

"In examining both SSDs, we can see that the MyDigitalSSD SC2 is clearly a higher performing SSD all around, solely by its performance when testing with incompressible data (media files).  As much as performance may be a consideration, however, we need to consider that any system with only 16GB of memory is doomed for anyone who plans to save anything on that SSD."

"Just like you and I, an SSD needs an adequate breathing space to perform at its best and upgrading this system with a higher capacity SSD will improve capacity, as well as guaranteeing long-term performance of the system."
