Synopsis: Is the 1TB MyDigitalSSD BOOST really the world's fastest USB 3.1 SSD? TweakTown’s Tyler Bernath compares the 1.92TB SanDisk Extreme 900 in his latest review.

In his latest review, TweakTown Consumer Storage Editor Tyler Bernath takes a look at the 1TB MyDigitalSSD BOOST and it's claim as the world's fastest USB 3.1 SSD - something the 1.92 TB SanDisk Extreme 900 may take issue with.

A company known for their track record of high-performance and budget-friendly solid state drives, MyDigitalSSD introduces the 1TB SuperSpeed Plus USB 3.1 BOOST external SSD as an alternative to pricier Thunderbolt devices for consumers looking to take data on the go or improve Xbox One or Steam game load times.

BOOST Features

Tyler breaks down some of the BOOST's notable features, including:

  • "A powder coated aluminum shell"
  • Inside of that, "two (Samsung PM851) mSATA SSDs configured in RAID 0 capable of reaching 830 MB/s read and 730 MB/s write."
  •  An ASMedia 1352R controller that "does most of the work with this solution".
  • The choice of color; red or black
  • "Includes two cables; one is USB-C to Micro B and the other Type-C to Micro B."
  • "Compatibility of this solution extends to Windows 2000+, OS X 10+, and Linux."
  •  And "an MSRP of $279.99 with a three-year warranty."

Performance Testing

Bernath then puts the BOOST through standard performance testing using Intel USB 3.1 host ports with Flash Bench, Anvil, and CrystalDiskMark benchmark software.

Tyler notes, "the internal PCB is using all the right components to allow this solution to reach top-notch USB 3.1 performance" and the BOOST does just that by reaching a peak of 880 MB/s read and 710 MB/s write on Flash Bench while also scoring similar numbers on the other tests.

How does the BOOST compare to the competition?

After comparing these results to external SSD benchmarks from other reviews, the BOOST stands tall amongst its competitors.

"Putting the MyDigitalSSD Boost into our charts, it's certainly one of the quickest drives on the market, but I did reach higher performance with the SanDisk Extreme 900."

So... it's not the world's fastest? Upon review of his findings, Bernath leaves the door open:

"The performance of this solution reached 820 MB/s read and 726 MB/s write within CrystalDiskMark while Flash Bench pushed this drive upwards of 880 MB/s read and 710 MB/s write. Laying claim to being the quickest USB 3.1 Gen 2 drive in the world, this solution fell just short of the SanDisk Extreme 900 1.92TB model I tested, but if capacities were even, I'd say it could very well be true."

What does it all mean?

That, at the very least, the MyDigitalSSD BOOST offers performance on par with The SanDisk Extreme 900 but at a much lower cost according to Bernath.

"MyDigitalSSD is set to win your vote with cost as this solution is easily the cheapest, quickest 1TB USB 3.1 Gen 2 device on the market, with an MSRP of $279.99 and a three-year warranty."

TweakTown Recommended Award Winner

Final Grade

Concluding his review, like eTeknix and Benchmark Reviews before him, Tyler comes away impressed with the BOOST's performance and value by saying:

"Affordable and portable, the Boost 1TB USB 3.1 Gen 2 portable SSD from MyDigitalSSD raises the bar on external storage."

With an 92% overall rating, the BOOST ranks as a "must have" and recipient of TweakTown's Silver Recommended Award.
