In his latest review, PC Perspective Storage Editor Allyn Malventano takes an in-depth look at the new MyDigitalSSD Super Boot eXpress (SBX) series of PCIe 3.0 x2 NVMe M.2 solid state drives available in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage capacities.
Unlike its predecessor, the Bullet Proof eXpress (BPX) with a PCIe 3.0 x 4 interface, MyDigitalSSD SBX drives use only 2 lanes. Allyn explains the benefits of doing so including lower cost and added power savings:
“Why take a seemingly backward step on the interface of an SSD? Several reasons actually. Halving the number of lanes makes for a simpler SSD controller design, which lowers cost. Power savings are also a factor, as driving a given twisted pair lane at PCIe 3.0 speeds draws measurable current from the host and therefore adds to the heat production of the SSD controller.”
Using the PC Perspective Custom SSD Test Suite to get truer real-world results, Allyn put each capacity to the test and found the SBX series overall meets its intended goal of being a "reasonably performant PCIe NVMe SSD at something closer to SATA SSD pricing."
Noting that SBX NVMe M.2 drives currently cost as little as $0.29 per Gigabyte, Malventano compares the SBX to the competition:
"Prices are great. These are not only cheaper than 960 EVOs, they are cheaper than 860 EVO (SATA) SSDs at the smaller capacities, all while offering better performance."
With sequential speeds up to 1.6GB/s, a 5 year warranty, and solid endurance figures, the MyDigitalSSD SBX series made a solid impression on Malventano, as he notes:
"The MyDigitalSSD SBX line achieves the goal of getting consumers from the 'MB/s
range' of SATA SSDs into the 'GB/s range' of NVMe products. Sure the interface
is limited to PCIe 3.0 x2, but that's a justified consequence of using the
Phison PS5008 E8 controller, which brings higher power efficiency and lower
cost. Despite the lower straight line speeds, I'm impressed with the performance
and especially the price of the SBX SSD lineup, and will likely make it a
default recommendation for budget builds moving forward."
Concluding his review, Allyn found the MyDigitalSSD SBX NVMe M.2 SSD series worthy of PC Perspective's Gold Award for value.
