The MyDigitalSSD OTG is an enclosed mobile SSD that offers storage on the go in an ultra-portable compact design. You can currently find the OTG available in: 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacities.
In this review, Bohs Hansen at eTeknix.com unboxes and bench tests a 512GB MyDigitalSSD OTG SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Mobile SSD to see how it stacks up against other portable/external drives and devices.
MyDigitalSSD OTG SSDs are an ideal storage solution for on-the-go users as they offer more than just storing data, as Hansen explains:
“...you could even run your operating system, play games and stream media directly from it, all without a hiccup”
How is such a small device capable of running an operating system or running games or apps you ask? That is in large part because of the OTG's USB 3.0 connection with UASP support, a feature that offers blazing fast transfer speeds as Bohs noted during testing:
“... the OTG mSSD performs impressive speeds up of to 452MB/s while reading and 432MB/s while writing. While these speeds will require a UASP capable system, but the drive is equally compatible with non-UASP USB 3.0 ports as well as USB 2.0.”
Touching on the points of mobility, Hansen had this to say about the OTG and its design:
“Just saying tiny or small doesn’t really justify this drive (OTG) as it’s just about the size of a credit card. The detachable micro-USB 3 cable further holds up the drives mobility. Oh, and it weighs just 35 grams, impressive.”
If you are one of those people that, through no fault of your own or just happen to, abuse devices in your possession then there is yet another reason to consider a mobile SSD. Due to there being no moving parts like you would find in a mechanical hard drive; the OTG can take a knock or two:
“Solid state storage is the optimal choice for portable mediums as it naturally is more resilient against bumps, shakes, and drops. This is further aided in this drive by the durable outer case design, so there is no need to worry about data loss in that area.”
Feeling secure about the data you have stored on the OTG isn’t the only advantage for no moving mechanical parts. By reducing the components to flash storage you are also actively saving on battery consumption. Something that is always on the mind traveling users:
“And without moving parts, the power requirements are a lot lower, making it even better as a portable drive and perfect for laptop or tablet use.”
Concluding on the OTG’s benchmark results in comparison to other tested drives, Hansen had this to say:
“The combined use of the Phison PS3108 S8 controller and Micron MLC Sync NAND Flash on the SSD with the ASmedia 1053 SATA to USB bridge chip on the converter board allowed this drive to take lead in almost all our benchmarks.”
In his final words on the OTG, Hansen says:
"MyDigitalSSD (OTG) is the fastest portable storage we’ve tested to date, and it isn’t even that expensive. The ultra light weight and compact form factor makes it perfect for people on the go.”
With that, the 512GB MyDigitalSSD OTG SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Mobile SSD walks away with the eTeknix "Extreme Performance" Award for excellence in its category.
