Synopsis: The SSD Review tries out one of our best selling ultra-portable solid state drives, the MyDigitalSSD OTG SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Pocket SSD, and comes away impressed with it's value, size, and performance.
Les Tokar

Les Tokar, technology nut and founder of The SSD Review, is at it again with yet another MyDigitalSSD product review! This time he takes a look at MyDigitalSSD latest mobile/portable solid state offering, the OTG SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Pocket SSD.

After running it through an array of tests, including a head to head comparison with the EDGE diskGO, Les awards the MyDigitalSSD OTG the SSD Review Gold Seal for it's combination of value, size, and performance.

Here are some snippets from his review:

"For those just starting to look at the performance of flash drives and external SSDs, a quick test of the OTG in USB 2.0 results in a top performance of 43MB/s, while USB 3.0 boosts that to 335MB/s, or roughly just under 8x faster. Now, when we kick in the same drive with SuperSpeed, the speed jumps to 441MB/s, or 10x faster than that same device using 2.0."

"How does this translate into moving files? Just to establish our point, we moved a 9GB Blu-ray movie in USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and then USB 3.0 SuperSpeed. USB 2.0 took 3 min 49 sec, USB 3.0 took 31sec and then SuperSpeed cut that time even further to 24 seconds . That was a Blu-ray film; it took only 3 seconds to move a HD movie."

"The OTG is UASP compliant and it is worthy of mention that, to get SuperSpeed performance, the system that you are plugging the OTG into must also be UASP compliant."

"Although we can identify very low IOPS with such external storage devices, the transfer performance for the MyDigitalSSD OTG SuperSpeed Pocket SSD, in this case, is very encouraging.  Consider the fact that this SSD is extremely small and weighs only 1.2 ounces, can transfer a HD video in only 3 seconds while, in the same sense, having the ability to hold over 800 HD movies."

"Value, size and performance are the three things that make the MyDigitalSSD OTG SuperSpeed Pocket SSD such a great product. It was only a matter of time before someone used the small size of the mSATA SSD to their advantage and we are now seeing the result in ultra small external SSDs. Timing of this couldn’t be better as we are seeing UASP and SuperSpeed make a successful transition into the retail market, which gives us incredible speed in a very small form factor."

"MyDigitalSSD is going one further by using just the right components in order to market the OTG (On The Go) as a value driven solution. This brings the SSD in at 66¢/GB and the only way it could have been done was with the Phison controller, a controller by the way that seems to be enjoying much success around the internet. MyDigitalSSD could have probably saved themselves a bit of money with ‘less premium’ memory offerings and we are glad they didn’t. Our being able to transfer a 9GB Blu-ray movie in 24 seconds, as well as a HD movie in 3 seconds, is the result."

"For value, performance and build size, we are awarding MyDigitalSSD with our Gold Seal."
