Synopsis: David Ramsey of Benchmark Reviews takes an in-depth look at the 256GB MyDigitalSSD Super Boot Drive SATA III/6G M.2 NGFF SSD and likes what he sees.

In this review, a 256GB MyDigitalSSD Super Boot Drive (SB) SATA III (6G) M.2 NGFF SSD is put to the test by Senior Staff Writer David Ramsey of Benchmark Reviews. While closely examining and benchmark testing the drive, Ramsey also explains the benefits of choosing an SSD over a spinning hard drive - making it a good read for anyone new to upgrading.

To test the Super Boot Drive, Ramsey used an M.2 to 2.5" SATA adapter so the SSD would fit into his testing station. Seeing as the SB is SATA III and not a PCIe M.2 SSD, using an adapter will have little to no effect on the drive's performance. (Note: adapters for converting M.2 to 2.5" are currently available in our Hard Drive & SSD Accessories section.)

When it comes to testing, Ramsey bases his final conclusion on two main factors of SSD performance:

  1. Access Time: The time it takes for the SSD to start sending data once the request has been sent.
  2. Transfer Rate: Once the transfer begins, the speed of that transfer is rated in megabytes per second (MB/s).

Benchmark Reviews are incredibly transparent about their testing process and explain the meaning behind the method. By opening up like this about testing it further validates their position in SSD testing as well as their conclusion from testing the product.

Starting off the testing is AS-SSD benchmark utility which brings in some impressive sequential read speeds, yet IOPS 4KB random read/writes are a little low. It is important to bear in mind that IOPS don’t accurately represent consumer usage.

ATTO benchmarks come off in a very positive light, and the sequential write speeds actually surpass the the max write of 410MB/s with 431MB/s: "...the read speeds are very good."

The CrystalDiskMark 3.0 tests bring in some exceptional sequential read/write results, but the 4K random read/writes were not too impressive especially at a larger queue depth. Queue depth essentially is requests for data being queued in formation in the SSD. A larger queue depth of 32 (as seen in the 4KB random read/write) or larger is more common in industrial type usage. From a consumer standpoint, the queue depth will not normally go large enough to affect performance, and Ramsey puts that into perspective with a hard drive comparison:

"For example, a Western Digital Velociraptor 1TB drive turns in less than 400 IOPS on this benchmark."

Comparing the SB to other M.2 NGFF SSDs, the SB really does shine in pricing and for 256GB of capacity storage, Ramsay says this:

"...at the time of this review (the MyDigitalSSD SB) is the least expensive m.2 SSD in this capacity that I can find."

If you are building a Small Form Factor/HTPC/Media PC or have one and in the need for compact 42mm M.2 NGFF SATA III storage solution, then the MyDigitalSSD Super Boot Drive comes recommended:

"...for building SFF (Small Form Factor) systems where m.2 capability is the most important factor"

Overall the MyDigitalSSD Super Boot Drive 256GB M.2 NGFF 42mm SSD scores very highly with Ramsey at Benchmark Reviews, and he highlights these features in his conclusion:

  • Least expensive m.2 SSD in this capacity…for now.
  • Supports TRIM, NCQ, and RAID
  • 3-year product warranty support
  • Very compact storage solution
  • Competitive linear read speeds

Final Score: 8.35 out of 10
