Synopsis: The SSD Review presents the MyDigitalSSD BP5e Slim 7 Series 2.5" SATA III SSD with their Top Value award, calling it "a great buy for anyone looking for high capacity at a low price point."

An early Christmas gift of sorts, a newly released 960GB (1TB) MyDigitalSSD Bullet Proof Eco (BP5e) Slim 7 Series 2.5" SATA III SSD landed in the hands of long-time PC tech enthusiast Sean Webster of The SSD Review for a thorough consumer review.

Sean takes the BP5e through rigorous benchmarking and endurance tests, pitting results against similar SSDs to see how it stacks up. He found, what really makes the BP5e stand out against other drives is its price for performance.

To kick off the review, Sean highlights MyDigitalSSD's use of the Phison S10 controller coupled with Toshiba TLC NAND flash to maximize performance and how it makes for a very competitive product at around only 25 cents per GB.

Performance Testing

Benchmarking the BP5e, several tests are ran through various programs to form a comparison and review summary. The SSD Review makes a point to use programs for testing that can be accessed and ran on the consumer level to get an idea of real world performance.

Starting off, the BP5e meets manufacturer performance claims under the ATTO Disk benchmark test: “These numbers (sequential read/write results) are nearly spot on with the listed specs. So far, off to a good start!”

The BP5e continues to fair as expected in continued sequential and 4K tests in Crystal Disk and Anvil, but pushes through to impress as suggested in the next test.

“Furthermore, it (BP5e) reaches 100K IOPS read and nearly 80K IOPS write! This is very impressive and shows the strength of this controller paired with Toshiba’s TLC.”

As mentioned by Sean, we really do see the benefit of the Phison S10 controller with the Toshiba TLC NAND flash in the BP5e. How it handles the incompressible data read/write tests really prove it’s worth against other SSDs in real world, everyday use.

The SSD Review continues BP5e testing with PCMark Vantage x64 HDD Suite and PCMark 8 Extended Storage. The purpose of PCMark is to test the SSD under more user like conditions such as boot-up, and running apps.

The BP5e fairs well under PCMark Vantage testing, as Sean states:

“Overall the MyDigitalSSD BP5e Slim 7 Series reached 79K points, thus proving to be a fairly competitive product for realistic workloads.”

The PCMark 8 Extended Storage is a grueling stage of just under 18 hours of SSD testing. During this phase the BP5e goes against several software steady state and recovery trials. Results are displayed in graphs, with a comparison to other SSDs that have been tested. This is where things get really interesting for the BP5e, and is worth checking out if you are comparing the BP5e to other mainstream SSDs:

“The BP5e Slim 7 Series is one of the best performing drives across the board too! In terms of latency, it is up there with one of the best mainstream SSDs, the Samsung 850 EVO and when looking at bandwidth, it is second to it only.”

With the BP5e performing so well in these tests, especially against other SSD manufacturers like Samsung and Crucial, it is no surprise that Sean of The SSD Review states:

“Considering the fairly consistent performance in both the heavy and light workload phases on top, we are very impressed.”

For another real world test, Sean transfers 30GB of movies from one SSD to another. Once again the BP5e stands out from it’s competition and is recommended for everyday work usage:

”... (the BP5e) proves to be a decent performer if you have light mixed workloads and makes it a much better buy at this price point.”

If you’re concerned with how fast the TLC Toshiba flash performs over work loads, don’t be with these HD Tune Pro results:

“the BP5e Slim 7 Series maintains speeds of about 300MB/s once the initial SLC cache is saturated, which is very good compared to its entry level competition.”

For the BP5e's final test, Sean examines the drive's idle power draw - an especially important test when you factor in laptop battery power draining. He found:

“With respect to power consumption, it compared well with other value based products and was actually more efficient than some.”

The SSD Review Top Value Award

In Conclusion

The 960GB MyDigitalSSD BP5e Slim 7 Series 2.5” SATA III SSD performed incredibly well in The SSD Review’s round of testing, earning their Top Value Award.

Not only does the BP5e prove some exceptional sequential read and write speeds, but some noteworthy random read and write speeds as well - giving it an edge over of other similar capacity budget SSDs by the likes of Samsung and Crucial. Not even the Samsung 850 EVO can compare to the BP5e in terms of price per GB, making it a "great buy for anyone looking for high capacity at a low price point".
