Synopsis: Unsure if your tablet or notebook is M.2 NGFF compatible? Click here for our growing list of devices with M.2 NGFF expansion slots. (Updated 6/19/16)

M.2 solid state drives, formerly M.2 NGFF (Next Generation Form Factor), are a great option for upgrading today’s thin/ultra portable notebooks, Ultrabooks, Chromebooks, Mini PCs, and more.

Like mSATA drives* that preceded them, M.2 SSDs offer high-speed performance with low power consumption and can be used as either a cache drive, in tandem with a HDD, or a boot/system drive when running an operating system, programs, and applications.

M.2 SSDs are currently available in both SATA and PCI-e interfaces** that offer 30mm (2230), 42mm (2242), 60mm (2260), 80mm (2280), and 110mm (2210) length form factors to accommodate assorted PCB and motherboard designs.

For maximum connectivity to M.2 ports, M.2 SSDs are available with different keys which offer varying bandwidths. These keys are displayed as different notches on the end of the drive. A drive with a single notch has an 'M' key which provides up to 4x lanes of bandwidth. A drive with two notches at the end have both an ‘M’ key and a 'B' key. This type of key maximizes compatibility in both slots and operates with 2x lanes of bandwidth.

Is my device M.2 compatible?

To help in finding M.2 compatibility, we’ve curated a working list of confirmed M.2 devices below based off manufacturer specifications*** and customer feedback. Each section is broken down by product type for easy perusal. If you know of one we've missed, please let us know in the comments.

"You don’t have xxx device on your list. Does that mean xxx device is not compatible with xxx SSDs?"

Our list is ongoing and always being worked on, and this means that your device might be compatible, but we haven’t got to listing it yet. Leave a comment about your compatibility success and we will add it to our update.

Don’t see your device listed below?
  • Let us find out: Leave a comment asking if your make/model is M.2 compatible.
Submitted comments are held for approval. Please allow up to 24hrs or longer for comment approval and reply
  • Try consulting our mSATA Compatibility List to see if your device shows up there.

Note: If your device uses "FastBoot" you may have to uncheck this option in the BIOS for it to recognize your SSD (Thank you Anton Hinxman for your comment)

* M.2 SSDs cannot be used in mSATA ports and vice versa.
** M.2 SATA & PCIe ports are not interchangeable unless noted by device manufacturer
*** Device configurations might not support M.2 SSDs. Please contact the device manufacturer for confirmation before making a purchase.

Dean - Yes, it is. See the link below for installation instructions directly from Lenovo.

Andreas - That is strange to hear from an 840 G1. For assistance troubleshooting this issue, please contact our Tech Support team by calling toll free at 1-866-217-1800, locally at 315-343-0090, or by emailing info@mydigitaldiscount.com.

Very good article and lot of useful comments. But I'm trying to extend my "HP Elitebook 840 G1" with an m.2 NGFF SSD as second storage. Normal SSD already running. Tried MyDigital 64GB Super Cache 2 and another SSD (64GB) from another manufacture. Both are not detected from BIOS or Windows 8.1?! Has anybody success? Which SSD? Which BIOS Version?

Hi,

Would the Lenovo Thinkpad E431 be SATA 42mm M.2 NGFF compatible?
MyDigitalDiscount.com Wednesday, May 21, 2014 07:41:30 AM
Tim,

Your post wasn't negative at all. They were great questions and we're glad you asked.

As M.2 NGFF popularity is rapidly growing, we're finding out something new every day and our hope is that this list can help answer some questions for users of all experience levels. Often times we're learning right along with you guys so we're grateful for the feedback we've received and the understanding customers who've been willing to test drive compatibility in their devices.

When contacting our Tech Support team, please be sure to reference your comment in this post as well as our full refund reply.

Thank you so much for the clarification and detailed explanation. My previous post was a bit negative because I had to remove some sentences due to the maximum size of the post, so sorry about that ;) It's nice to see the the effort mydigitaldiscount is putting into creating this overview because information is really lacking about this subject on the internet (one of the reasons I need all the room of the post asking my questions :) ). I'll contact the tech support team to discuss the upgrade options.

Johannes,

No, the 450 G1 i7 does not appear to be M.2 compatible.
Johannes Thursday, May 15, 2014 03:12:38 AM
Hey!
Is the HP ProBook 450 (F7X73ES) compatible?
Thx!
MyDigitalDiscount.com Tuesday, May 13, 2014 09:39:25 AM
Tim,

Whether or not Sony made different motherboards, only Sony really knows for now. Manufacturers tend to keep that information close to the vest because of their dislike for aftermarket upgrades that void the warranties of their products. We haven't had hands on experience with your ultrabook to give you a concrete answer but we'd love to find out.

The information we post in this compatibility list is gathered through our own research, customer feedback, and old fashioned trial and error - the latter being what we'd resort to in verifying if an 80mm PCE-e would in fact work in your VAIO Pro.

For now, the most we can offer is complete support on any purchase made with us. If you purchase an upgrade from My Digital Discount and it does not work, we will gladly offer a full refund, including shipping, to get verification for future customer inquiries.

If you would like to discuss the upgrade options we have available with our Tech Support team before placing an order, you can contact them at toll free at 1-866-217-1800, locally at 315-343-0090, or by emailing info@mydigitaldiscount.com.

As for size goes, we're hoping to see 512GB 80MM drives by the end of summer, and possibly 1TB drives soon after that, in the same 80mm form factor.
Tim Monday, May 12, 2014 02:42:58 PM
My questions are about the Vaio Pro SVP1321C5E, with SATA 600 Samsung MZNTD128HAGM SSD. I really like the overview you're giving here but it could be a bit more clear regarding the following questions (for somebody who doesn't really knows all technical details, like me).

Is Sony actually using two different motherboards to support the PCIe or SATA SSD? Or can a single motherboard support both types of SSD? I'm also asking this because at the overview of 80mm PCI-e the Vaio Pro is also mentioned but without the asterisks. So I was wondering if it is always possible to use the 80mm PCI-e is in the Vaio Pro 13.

My next question is about the maximum size of the SSD. This will also have to do whether Sony uses two different motherboards, but that would only be a change in wiring and connectors right? Not the actual size of the motherboard? Because the Sony Vaio Pro isn't mentioned in the 2280 SSD overview. According to www.bplus.com.tw/ my SSD is actually the 2280 form factor.
