Synopsis: Nathan Kirsch reviews the 960GB MyDigitalSSD Super Boot eXpress Eco, a drive he says “serves the NVMe market like no other brand.”

As more consumers make the jump from SATA III to PCIe NVMe solid state drives, Legit Reviews founder Nathan Kirsch set his sights on the recently released 960GB MyDigitalSSD SBXe PCIe 3.1 x4 NVMe 2280 M.2 SSD, a new low-cost drive with a price-point that helps users upgrade from traditional hard drives and SATA drives to NVMe drives without looking back.

Created to offer customers as much speed as possible at a cost that is friendly to the average consumer, the SBXe drive features a single-sided M.2 design that fits today’s thinnest laptops and desktops with an open PCIe slot. Combining Phison’s PS5013-E13T 4-channel DRAM-less controller and 3D NAND flash, MyDigitalSSD lowered build costs without affecting SSD performance or quality and in turn pass those savings onto their customers with an entry-level SSD that costs only 9 cents per GB.

Kirsch ran the 960GB SBXe through a variety of benchmark programs, comparing its results to other consumer 1TB SATA III and PCIe SSDs in both synthetic testing as well as real-world application performance.

Starting with Anvil's Storage Utilities at 100% compression, the SBXe came in just ahead of the Crucial P1 and “miles ahead of the other SATA III SSDs." Turning to real-world performance testing, the SBXe recorded transfer rates double that of the closest SATA III SSD and ranked “right there with the pack of NVMe drives” when opening image-heavy text documents.

After completing all the performance tests on the SBXe SSD Kirsch writes that the 960GB MyDigitalSSD drive was indeed faster than all the SATA III SSDs in almost every test that was ran.

Kirsch also made sure to note that another area where the SBXe excels is its endurance rating at 720TBW, backed by a 5-year warranty. Nathan calls it "one of the highest endurance ratings that we have ever seen on a 960GB drive and is pretty remarkable on an entry-level consumer product."

In the end, Kirsch awarded MyDigitalSSD’s latest offering with Legit Reviews’ Value Award and praised the SBXe for addressing customer needs, saying:

"The MyDigitalSSD SBXe series gets our value award because it serves the low-cost NVMe market like no other brand is currently doing."
