After reviewing a youtube video of the recording made by the Vosonic GV6300, I was sold on the purchase of this little black-box mobile device. After receiving this little self-contained video log camera, I was somewhat impressed at the design. The installation and start up was a breeze. The user guide is easy to understand and getting started in documenting my time driving was a breeze. After unpacking the unit and reading the user guide, I realized I couldn't do any recording until I purchased a micro SD memory card. I made a few phone calls to see if any local vendors had a 32GB card, but hardly any stores stock one. Best Buy had one, but at $302.00 for a 32GB Micro card, I settled for a 16GB card I found at Radio Shack on sale for $119.00. According to Vosonic, this should get me 20 to 24 hours of recording time. Because the GV6300 can overwrite the oldest files first after maxing the card out, I feel the 16GB card is good enough. During installation I started with mounting the GV6300 with the sun visor clip included with the package. I found the lock nut adjustment ring on the clip difficult to set the way I wanted and several times it popped off the threads and was difficult to re-thread it with out cross- threading it due to is poor design. After getting it set where I wanted it on the passenger side visor, the first test drive proved this was not going to work due to the vibration of the camera mounted on the visor. Thanks to My Digital Discount, they also included the optional windshield mount at no extra charge. After re-installing the unit using the windshield mount, I found the unit to be much more stable and suited to its application in being steady and ready to record properly. Mounted in the upper right hand corner of the windshield I found the GV6300 was small enough not to obstruct my view of the road at all. After accessing the menu to set the time and date, I had to wear my reading glasses to read mouse print in the menu options it was so small. I then chose to format the card, just to be safe, which only took about 10 seconds. I really like the way the unit starts recording as soon as its power supply is availible. I also like that the way the unit holds a charge long enough when powered down to close and finalize the video file. After taking the GV6300 for a test drive, I went home and plugged it into my Mac with the standard USB cable included with the unit. I like that the unit at this point is powered via USB. After opening iMovie, the video files were easily accessed and downloaded into the program. My Mac took 4 min to process each 200MB file. After reviewing the recordings, I was a little disappointed at the picture quality, but I've been spoiled by 1080p video too long. I found the GV6300 picture quality had good color balance and contrast, but was a little blurry due to light refraction from having to look through the windshield. I also noticed some picture hopping or what appeared to be missing frames. Not really enough to miss anything important. What was really great about the picture quality, is there is no difference in quality when the picture is paused, reversed, or fast forwarded. The clarity of the picture is not good enough to read license plate numbers at over 25 feet distance. I think this would improve if the camera could be mounted out side the car. The built in microphone is very sensitive and can record normal conversation at incredible distance from the car with the window open. The sound quality is good with excellent low frequency range. In iMovie, fast forward or reverse seeking is very fast, however seeking using the GV6300 alone is very slow. I found the unit to be well built. However, due to recommendation of the manufacture, I wouldn't let it get wet or subject it to sudden temperature changes or extreme temperatures. Leaving the unit enclosed in your car on a hot summer day may damage it. I was somewhat disappointed when I plugged the unit into my TV using the supplied AV cable. The video signal was very weak and the picture was so dark I had to boost the TV picture and brightness 30% to gain an acceptable picture. The NTSC signal to my TV was very pixelated and not near as good as the picture quality from the video file on my computer. All in all, for the price of $154.00, not including the cost of the SD card, I think the GV6300 is a must have for commercial drivers and anyone who needs irrefutable video evidence on the go.
