This card reader has a short connector/adapter to connect itself to a USB 3.0 port. This is good for use with laptops. Using with desktops would be a problem because of its weight hangs from a USB 3.0 port would cause intermittent connection. Connection to the back of the desktops would be impracticable. Buying a USB extension cord that works would add cost. Bad USB extension cord would drop the reader speed to USB 2.0. I no longer have the reader so I don't really know the quality and durability.

Review comment The transfer speed can hit 60. Old usb2 reader I had would average 20 with same card. Only slight detraction from perfect score is the adapter dongle. Don't loose it.

Short version - this thing is amazing. I used a 533x speed CF card to test the transfer of 7.4 GB of data using this, my camera connected via usb cable, a USB 2.0 reader and USB 1.0 reader. Transfer time was 2:06 for the PRETEC, 7:47 for the camera connection, an hour for USB2.0 and over 2 hours for USB 1. Review comment I wrote a full review at http://www.thewave.info/Reviews/P240. Here is my conclusion "If you've got a fast CF card, and a fast hard drive or SSD, you can cut transfer times by as much as 70% using the P240. With a slower card or hard drive you should also see some gains, but not nearly as much."
