Comments on MyDigitalSSD mSATA, Half Slim, and 2.5" SATA SSD Firmware Update

Guys, fantastic work! My 4 year old laptop was virtually dead due to the crap Corsair firmware. The update made it at least 10 times faster, and it's now behaving like a brand new machine. Tuesday, July 9, 2013 08:25:12

While solid and quick, the Verbatim Black still only uses a SATA II interface. SATA II is usually fine for Windows 7 but Windows 8 is even more optimized for SSD use. A SATA III (6G) drive would reduce, and in some cases eliminate, the lag you're experiencing when multitasking.

One suggestion we have is to write the SSD back to zeros with Parted Magic, as seen in the link below, and try the SSD again.

If, after trying this, you are still experiencing slow downs and hold ups, you might want to upgrade to a SATA III (6G) SSD like our BP4 drives found in the link below.

I am convinced you guys did your best to provide updates for the Phison S5, unfortunately I am still disappointed with the day to day use of my Verbatim 128G black edition.

I flashed it using the F030 update, and things seemed to go well since. My machine is getting incredibly fast, at least for one thing at a moment. I realize multitasking leads to stutter and freezing issues.

I am using a Windows 8 on a old machine (Intel T9400 2.53Mhz and 4 GB RAM). Using it for gaming, surfing, writing, storing pictures and video is very fast. The problem is the multitasking. For example, when I am installing a new software, I want to surf a bit during the time it is installed : it's impossible: the computer is freezing hardly, the disk reaches 100% in the task manager (when I manage to open it...) during *minutes*.

Having several application running together that tries to write on the disk cannot be done without freezes, stutters, and a trivial operation turns to a nightmare...

Surprisingly, everything goes well apart this.

That's why I wonder if I am the only one who experience this. I probably misconfigured some part of my OS or I may have forgotten some essential steps. Can I have some pointers about what I can check ?

Thanks a lot for help,

I did upgrade on my dell E6400 on ATA controller mode and everything has gone fine. SSD use verbatim 128gb. Wednesday, March 13, 2013 09:05:52

Yes, you're correct. The 030 was the last update to ever be released for the S5 controller.
iPodes Wednesday, March 13, 2013 05:00:31

Just to confirm, there wasn't any new firmware update release for Phison S5?

There is no Mac solution at this time. You'll have to find someone with a PC to assist you in performing the update for you to use it in a Mac afterwards.

If you do not have access to a PC, we'd be happy to upgrade your device for you. Simply email, or call toll free 1-866-217-1800, for details on setting that up.

How do I do instal this firmware using a Mac?
Scoubidouille Tuesday, February 5, 2013 13:58:40
Nice to see such a team working towards user's satisfaction!
I upgraded a Verbatim 128GB Black Edition from S5FAM012 to S5FAM017 like a charm a few months ago with success and I plan to do the same with the new S5FAM030 firmware in a few days.
Just curious, has anybody a link to the Verbatim (Win PE supposed version) version as the link below is broken ?
Thanks in advance and Greetings from France! Monday, February 4, 2013 09:10:14

Thanks for the kind words! As it stands now, Phison's controller focus is on the S8 but if they do release an update for the S5, rest assured, we'll post it here.

Steven's method also worked for me on a H61m-p23 Mobo (s.1155), I had the error message "No valid sata disk inserted" even in IDE mode, I managed to update the firmware with no problem then.
For now I can't say if my Verb behaves better, I'll have to test it a bit more.

Do you have any news about next update of firmware for S5 controller - enabled drives? Cant wait to improve my V4 even further! Looks like you guys care about your customers more than some other vendors.
Keep up good work! thx!

Steven's method worked on my Thinkpad T61p with Corsair Nova 2 v60gb2 and S5FAM030. The output from dlmc went by too quick and couldn't be run through "more" or paused quickly enough. "dlmc 0x1f0 -master" worked perfect though. The SSD was the only drive in the laptop. Tuesday, January 22, 2013 08:25:14
iPodes - You're quite welcome! Thank you for the suggestion as well, we'll be sure to look into that.

Scar - That's tough for us to diagnose as we don't have much familiarity with the Crucial V4 but hopefully somebody reading this, whose had a similar issue, can offer a solution.
Scar Tuesday, January 22, 2013 06:43:38
No luck with upgrading Crucial V4 64GiB :( "No compatible SATA device found" - Anyone had that problem?
iPodes Monday, January 21, 2013 11:33:47
Just came here to say thanks for having better support here than by a company with at least ten times your size. Such a shame for Verbatim.

I have a Verbatim 64 GB SSD Sata II (Product Number: 47473) and I had never upgraded the firmware since I bought the SSD.

Must say that after upgrading to S5FAM030 the behavior it's completely different. No hanging times, faster boot and faster response.

The tutorial it's also quite complete. (I would just suggest to make a guide for how to clone the SSD content and move it back again after firmware upgrade)

Once again thanks for your work,
Regards. Monday, January 21, 2013 08:22:40

We're happy to hear your laptop is running smoothly but we are not provided change logs for our updates.

The last few updates have mostly addressed speed issues that have arisen during use but the next release, FW V4.6, will focus on compatibility issues, even faster speeds, overprovisioning, and increased lifespan. Stay tuned to our Twitter @MyDigital for more details this week.

Flashed successfully my V4 256Gb. Works good on my Laptop. Is it possible to read changelog of this firmware over previous versions. Thanks in advance! Tuesday, January 15, 2013 11:43:08
ticoloco - Those are unusual results and could even have something to do with the type of data/information populating the SSD. Please contact with more details, including what exactly the drive is being used for, and we'll do our best to help you find a solution to this issue.

Papa Hobbit - We've had success with Verbatim drives in the past but, unfortunately, we do not have the knowledge base of their products to tell you if something has changed where this firmware upgrade no longer works with their products.

Because we do not deal directly with Verbatim, you'll need to contact them directly for further assistance.
Papa Hobbit Tuesday, January 15, 2013 11:31:00
The firmware S5FAM030 can not install on the Verbatim 128 GB Black. After entering the "ISP" software crash after some time. I have tried in bios IDE, RAID and AHCI.
My board is an Intel DP35DP.

The S5FAM030 works wonders for the Crucial v4. If anyone has a changelog, please post it!

Think I might have a lemon MyDigitalSSD BP 128GB microSATA. Lenovo T410s sometimes becomes barely useable with these results despite 030 FW:

seq: 32 ; 7
512K: 22 ; 4
4K: 0.7 ; 1.2
QD32: 64 ; 11

At other times, I get more "normal" results:

seq: 224 ; 93
512K: 152 ; 57
4K: 8 ; 13
QD32: 64 ; 18

Using CrystalDiskMark. Drive has 110GB of 119GB in use. Am using Windows 8 x64.

Any ideas? Any other test I could run to diagnose what might be wrong? Taskmanager doesn't show any fishy programs hogging the drive, instead showing it's often reading at 100% at 1 MB/s.

Hi Folk Thanks for Your S5 Firmware My Intenso SSD 32 GB is now a rocket. Before the max speed was in read/rite approx. 40 MB/S, now its over 130MB/S.

Thanks a lot Wednesday, January 2, 2013 08:40:08
AY - Thank you for the tips, we're glad to hear the firmware has helped.

Fabio - That's great to hear!

PALOY - We're happy to hear your notebook is running smoother. As far as freeware goes, here are a few trusted programs we like to use.

1. For unbuffered speed results, we use CrystalDiskMark.
2. For buffered speed results showing the drive's maximum potential, we use ATTO Benchmark.
3. For SSD firmware and feature information, we use CrystalDiskInfo.

Regarding life span and current status on the life of the SSD, we have yet to find a truly accurate program but we're always on the lookout.
PALOY Sunday, December 30, 2012 06:48:01

First, thank you for the 030 firmware, my DELL now it's working without freezing.

Can you recommend some freewares to check the SSD, I have tried some without success.

Fabio Friday, December 28, 2012 15:15:56
Worked with my Verbatim 128Gb drive, using FW 030, ide mode, and the DOS updater, disk is MUCH better now in sequential R/W like a previous user said it makes the hardware worth the purchase :)

AY Friday, December 28, 2012 13:02:20
S5FAM030_FW works awhole better for Crucial V4 256GB in a Dell E4310. Less frequent locks up. Upgraded from stock FAM022 to FAM030. In the bios, ATA must be selected before it'd recognize the drive. Also, disable caching in Windows. Wednesday, December 26, 2012 08:45:21

Please make sure the drive you are trying to update is the only drive installed in the computer. For further troubleshooting, please contact our support team via email using
