mSATA solid state drives are some of the hottest SSDs on the market today, popping up in a variety of the latest mobile devices, netbooks, and notebook PCs. As time goes on, more and more people are catching wind of the SSD trend, which is no surprise to us since the performance of these drives are head and shoulders above the rest. There is really so much to love about these mSATAs - the difference is very noticeable when a small PC notebook using an mSATA SSD can boot-up and load applications faster than a top-of-the-line HDD desktop only five years ago.
At My Digital Discount, we have had a number of customers ask us if their computers are mSATA compatible. The following is a list of some of the most popular mSATA compatible models being used today:

Ricochet, Either MyDigitalSSD mSATA option will work in your laptop, it's simply a matter or speed vs. price. |

Marc, We suggest posing the 6G question to ZOTAC as they'd better know the answer to that question. However, the Z68 chipset features Intel Smart Response Technology that allows you to use the SSD as a cache drive. While we haven't tested that particular motherboard in our offices, we see no reason to believe that SRT can't be turned off where the SSD can be used as a standard drive as well. |

The ZOTAC Z68-ITX WiFi Supreme lists a mSATA port, and sports an Intel Z68 chipset. Does it take mSATA 6G or only the slower regular mSATA ssd's? Will it be treated like a regular drive, or as a drive cache? http://www.zotac.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_images-SRW.tpl&product_id=363&category_id=146&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=100259&lang=em |

Dima, We're not entirely familiar with that PC but after a little research it appears that you may be able to use an mSATA drive. You're more than welcome to try one with a full refund guarantee if for any reason it doesn't work. |

chanseng, The K3VLAR-3 is only faster when using a SATA 6G connection (which not all mSATA ports have) and it's only faster in the sequential (large file) data transfer. This means that the only time you'll ever notice the real life speeds would be if you have a second SATA 6G SandForce driven SSD hooked up inside your laptop and you move over a Blu-ray movie, because yes theoretically it can move a 16GB file in about 10 seconds. Sequential speeds, although impressive, are somewhat moot when your main goal is speeding up your operating system. Actually, the regular K3M is made with better flash (hence the price) therefore the 4K speeds (reading and writing of small system files) are much faster, thus allowing Windows to perform faster. Regarding cloning, if you clone your hard drive to the SSD, you'll want to set the SSD to be the main boot device in the bios. A Windows re-installation is not necessary. |

it seem K3VLAR-3 is much faster and cheaper then K3VLAR version. Is the -3 version also work with T420? If I first install the necessary driver on my harddisk then clone this Win7 to K3VLAR. Is Win7 re-installation still required? |

Hi i was wondering if i can upgrade to a faster and higher capacity msata sdd for my acer aspire timelineU m3. I have a base model with a core i5 2467m, 6gb ddr3 ram, nvidia 640m 1gb ddr3 and 20gb msata ssd working along side a 500gb 5400 harddisk. I believe that this particular model might be limited to sata 3Gbps. Which of the possible msata would be a good match, speed and increase capacity are essential. Thank you. |

Tim, Thanks for the suggestion. We'll look into it further to see if the replacement models still offer mSATA capabilities but the E520 will be added to the list. |

The Lenovo E520 is mSata compatible. I have one of your 64GB units fitted. However, this laptop has been sent for warranty repairs twice in 3 months, and is exhibiting similar symptoms within hours of its most recent return. There is obvious there is a systemic problem with this model, as they have now offered a replacement. No doubt I am not alone. Whether the replacements, which one hopes will have the problem sorted, will continue to support mSata, is unknown. |

Charles, A mSATA SSD will not work in this instance. While the slot is the right size dimensionally, it's actually a different pin configuration. You would need something like the Super Talent CoreStore MV drives found in the link below. http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/super-talent-true-mini-pci-e-ssd/?&sort=alphaaz&sort_direction=0&xsearch_e11=Super%20Talent%20CoreStore%20MV |

on the ideapad y510, that extra port is mpcie, not msata. If you had the optional tv tuner, it would have gone in the empty slot near the hard drive. |

Willy, Upon further research, the mSATA will not work in the Lenovo Ideapad Y510. The slot you're looking at is a Mini PCI-e slot, commonly confused with mSATA ports as they look fairly similar. |

I will repeat Kevin's question. I want to put this in my wifes Lenovo Ideapad Y510. I did notice a mSATA (or at least that's what I think it is) slot next to hard drive, and wanted to turbocharge her laptop using this ssd as system drive. Please comment on compatibility. |

elbin, Basically, if your motherboard has an mSATA port it will work as another volume which can be used for storage or even running your OS, if it has a mSATA port and the Sandy Bridge, it will treat the SSD put in the mSATA port as a cache drive. |

Kevin G., Does the BIOS see the drive and, if so, is it seeing the drive correctly? We've just updated another blog post with the latest firmware for mSATA drives with the Phison S5 controller along with a how-to manual (PDF) in the link below. That may help. http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/mydigitalssd-msata-half-slim-and-2.5-inch-sata-ssd-firmware-update.html If not, feel free to call our support line to discuss the issue further with out tech department. |
